Top Glow Secrets from a Supermodel

In her latest Vogue beauty feature, Bella Hadid shows off her beautiful neutral olive skin in a marble-tiled bathroom video. Her skin is bare and she looks like a regular girl with thin eyebrows, under eye circles, scattered freckles. Yet, her supermodel features captivate the camera and the glint in her eye, as she discusses her beauty routine, wins us over instantly. Apparently, no one pairs $5 drugstore skincare with $200 luxury skincare like models and celebrities do. Bella breaks down her morning skincare routine and it is so relatable we can't help but rewatch over and over again.

Her Skin

While she doesn't talk extensively about her specific skin type, Bella prefers to use clean beauty products that help her skin stay hydrated while also gently exfoliating and maintaining a good PH balance. Products like the Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 reflect her love for simple yet exfoliating products because they help remove dead skin cells, making the skin appear smoother and brighter. Using the Biologique Colostrum serum with lipid-restoring treatment Bella gets the hydration she craves (Bella tends to have dry skin) for a plumper radiant look. She ends her routine with a thick, moisturizing, affordable moisturizer from Weleda. To achieve Bella Hadid’s glowy supermodel skincare base is simple yet effective. You can combine high end brands with trademarked actives like Biologique Recherche’s, Augustinus Bader, Dr. Barbara Sturm or drugstore skincare like Weleda, Burt’s Bees etc  to get that radiant supermodel gaze that lights up cameras and draw envy from most.

The Science

Hydrating brings water to skin cells using humectants ( powerhouse hydrating ingredients) and increases their water content thereby giving the skin a plump and refreshed look. This is the basis of the Kbeauty glass skin that has gone viral and have us worshipping fresh and bare glazed donut and dolphin sheen looks. These include glycerin, hyaluronic acid, panthenol etc. Meanwhile, moisturizing refers to oil-based ingredients (occlusives, emollients and proteins)  that form a layer on the skin to prevent water loss and protect the skin’s barrier as well. Bella prefers hydrating and gentle exfoliating products to help the skin absorb the moisturizing products better in one step.  Part of our catalog, the Amatus Skin Complex moisturizer is both a moisturizer and hydrator due to the plethora of skin-rich actives like soluble collagen, ceramides, Vitamin C

Bella's Skin Type

Mediterranean skin tone. Bella’s skin type falls on the Fitzpatrick scale IV which means she doesn’t burn easily, scars easily, tans and tends to be more reactive to harsh ingredients. Therefore, she prefers gentle exfoliation over harsher ones which can be paired with vitamin C for a bright and revived hue. SPF 30+  suits Bella’s Mediterranean skin tone and although her skin type tans easily she is still susceptible to sun damage.

Bella is in tune with her skin’s needs and her products work well for combination and dry skin even while battling Lupus.  Her neutral olive skin tone also affects how she uses products and how she shops for them. She goes for radiant and plump skin while avoiding breakouts or contact dermatitis which are common post-fashion week. Bella mentions that stress, used makeup brushes, lack of enough  sleep can trigger breakouts right after a fashion show.

The Tools

Bella Hadid is known for her snatched model face. While her tight updos and sharpened eyebrows help give her face a pulled look, so does the tools she uses. At the beginning of her routine, Bella uses the NuFace tool. This tool uses microcurrents to help depuff and shape the face. She explains that this tool is beneficial for her snatched jaw and model cheekbones, but also for lymphatic drainage, since she has a hard time doing so with her autoimmune disease.

Why Her Routine Stands Out

Bella Hadid’s glowy supermodel skincare routine stands out because she balances luxury and affordable products while also balancing exfoliation and hydration. Her skincare routine reflects the importance of exfoliating your skin so more products can absorb better. This is because the exfoliant helps the the top layer of your skin shed the dead skin cells to reveal a clean and healed skin layer. Bella Hadid's routine also reflects how important it is to stay hydrated and moisturized when keeping up with exfoliation, even when it's gentle. She has a great skincare routine for her neutral olive skin as it isn't too harsh, but also for her what seems to be combination skin, as she hydrates while also cleaning out her pores. The Wrap Up (you made it here)!

While we would all kill to be backstage at a Chanel show getting our makeup done, we might need to bring our own makeup brushes. Bella highlight that the same makeup brushes, just cleansed lightly, tend to be used for all the other models. This might be a trigger for her post-show breakouts. Using both luxury and drugstore skincare suits Bella’s skin tone as drugstore skincare tends to use simpler, more natural ingredients that cater to olive skin tones. On the other hand, luxury skincare use more loaded actives with a wider range of organic ingredients for intense and sophisticated care. While, drugstore skincare tend to maintain well-cared for skin and prevent breakouts;  luxury skincare treats and protects vulnerable skin.
